Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a condition that affects approximately 5% of the British population, leaving many feeling anxious and unhappy. It is a condition that causes the body to sweat more than necessary to regulate body temperature.

The excessive sweating usually occurs in the underarms, palms, or soles of the feet and this can impact people’s everyday lives. Not being able to have control over the amount you sweat and being left with large sweat patches and the possibility of body odour can be extremely embarrassing.

Can Hyperhidrosis be cured?

It’s entirely possible! In fact, anti-wrinkle injections are recommended by the NHS if a patient continues to suffer from hyperhidrosis after trying other methods, such as antiperspirants. Strategically administered doses of anti-wrinkle injections can reduce the amount of sweating by as much as 80%. These results are also fast acting and you can expect to see a significant reduction in sweat production within the first four weeks after your first treatment.

Due to the anti-wrinkle injections being made from a naturally occurring protein, over time the body will absorb the product. This means that, to maintain the best, driest results, the treatment will need to be topped up every three to six months. With some patients, treatment is only required during the summer months.

How do the anti-wrinkle injections work?

This is a treatment delivered through injection into the affected area. Anti-wrinkle injections are made up of proteins that temporarily paralyse the surrounding tissue where the injection is administered. Sweating occurs when signals between the brain and the nerves communicate with the sweat glands and essentially tell them to produce sweat. The paralysing qualities of the protein block these signals to the surrounding nerves. In turn, this stops the sweat glands from working so hard, preventing the glands from producing excessive amounts of sweat.
